Health Care for the Homeless observes Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day

December 23, 2020

On December 16, the Institute’s Health Care for the Homeless staff attended this year’s  Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day event to honor those who passed away while experiencing homelessness. Through our Health Care for the Homeless program, the Institute provides medical care at several Manhattan locations serving people experiencing homelessness. This year, the memorial event was hosted by Care for the Homeless and Urban Pathways and help online. In total, nearly 400 names were read at the event, almost twice as many as in years past.

Lili Bohan, the assistant director of Valley Lodge, where the Institute provides medical care, read a eulogy and shared memories of Valley Lodge clients and staff lost this year—memories of people who cared for each other and who shared their talents with their communities.

“They were all sons and daughters. Some were born here. Some immigrated. Some were brothers, sisters, parents,” Bohan said.

“It was an extremely moving event,” said Elisa Wallman Jacques, the Institute’s Director of Community Programs. “I was grateful to participate and honor those that were lost.”
