The Institute for Family Health’s Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Receives HRSA Funding for Four Additional Years

July 27, 2023

The Institute for Family Health was awarded a total of $2,046,100 from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund four additional years of residency training for family nurse practitioners in the Bronx. These additional funds will enable the Institute for Family Health to sustain and enhance the Family Nurse Practitioner Residency program, which provides training for four family nurse practitioners per class of residents.

Founded in 2020, the Family Nurse Practitioner Residency trains nurse practitioners to provide primary health care services in medically underserved communities. Training takes place at two Institute health centers in the Bronx and leverages the strengths of advanced practice nursing and the community health center model of care to provide a comprehensive and effective training experience in an urban environment.

Margaret Walsh, FNP-BC, the director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Residency, said, “We are proud to continue to offer this training opportunity to the next generation of family nurse practitioners. There is a pressing need in our communities for skilled health professionals, and we are proud to train highly-skilled nurse practitioners who are well-equipped to meet these needs.”

Candice Elam, DNP, FNP-C, a member of the Institute’s Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Class of 2022 said, “Participating in the residency was one of the best things I’d done for my professional development. Every day, I (and my patients, more importantly) reap the benefits of the training I got at the Institute for Family Health.”

Family nurse practitioners are independently-licensed advanced practice nurses, whose scope of clinical services includes primary care for adults and children of all ages. The Institute has a long history of cultivating nurse practitioner leadership. Since the Institute’s inception, Institute health centers have been staffed by primary care teams that frequently include family nurse practitioners and family physicians working side-by-side to deliver outstanding care to people of all ages.

Family nurse practitioner degree candidates are invited to visit institute.org/fnpresidency in late 2023 for information on how to apply for a residency position for the 2024-2025 academic year.
