Training & Careers

The Institute for Family Health is committed to training the next generation of allied health professionals to provide high quality, family-oriented care to people in underserved communities.

The Institute operates three residency training programs in family medicine. The Harlem Residency in Family Medicine is a federally funded Teaching Health Center and received ACGME accreditation in 2012. This 12-12-12 residency program is a collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Hospital. The Mount Sinai Downtown Residency in Urban Family Practice is a 24-resident family practice program operated in Manhattan in collaboration with Mount Sinai. The Institute’s Mid Hudson Family Practice Residency trains residents in collaboration with the Kingston Hospital. In 2011, the Mid-Hudson program was awarded federal funding to become one of the first Teaching Health Centers in the country. As the New York Metropolitan Regional Office of the New York State Area Health Education Center System, the Institute has expanded opportunities for community-based clinical training of future health professionals. The AHEC program recruits students from underrepresented populations and provides experiences for them in underserved communities in an attempt to encourage them to train and practice in such communities.
