Outcomes of IUD Use in Teens vs. Non-Teens

The Institute for Family Health is proud to acknowledge the poster presentation at the recent Society of Family Planning Conference by Dr. Anita Ravi, a 3rd year resident of the Institute’s Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Practice, and her mentor Dr. Linda Prine, our director of Women’s Health and an Associate Clinical Professor. The research project, funded by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), employed a retrospective chart review to compare outcomes of Intrauterine Device (IUD) use in teens and non-teens. The results showed that teen IUD users did not have higher sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates than non-teen users, nor did they have higher IUD expulsion or removal rates. The study won “best paper by a resident” in 2013 from the AAFP. The poster was also presented at the national meeting of the Association of Reproductive Health Care Professionals. Special thanks to Susan Rubin, Eve Waltermeuer and Natasha Miller, who contributed to the study.
