Professional experience & accomplishments

Nailah is a first-generation immigrant from Jamaica, who was subsequently raised in the diverse communities of Brooklyn and Philadelphia. It was within these communities that she discovered a profound interest in social justice. This passion drove her to pursue a degree in biology and psychology with a concentration in peace and justice studies during college, where she delved deeper into exploring issues of socioeconomic and racial inequality.

Throughout her college experience, Nailah was driven by a relentless desire to spread awareness of social inequity and to create a positive change for the community she lived in. In this time, she established an ESL and tutoring program for refugee and immigrant students, collaborated with staff, administrators, and students to support the resettlement of refugees, and organized events that celebrated the different cultures of each refugee community while simultaneously raising funds for housing, supplies, and other necessities. As a student, she recognized the pressing need to support and empower underserved communities, and this ignited her passion for combining healthcare and social justice.

In medical school, Nailah continued her dedication to social justice by actively mentoring local high school students interested in medicine and working with the Student National Medical Association to enact change for the community they served. She further explored her interests in genetics and has hopes to advance the integration of genetics in primary care. Her commitment to social justice remains an integral part of her approach to patient care, as she strives to not only treat medical conditions but to also understand the daily context of a patient’s life that determines their health.

In her spare time, she enjoys antiquing, going to concerts, traveling, and catching up on her many TV shows.
