The Institute Opens New Health Center Near Westchester Square in the Bronx
May 01, 2018
New York, NY (May 1, 2018) – On Tuesday, May 1st, the Institute for Family Health opened a new health center, The Institute for Family Health at Westchester Square, located at 1420 Ferris Place in the Bronx. The center is the 32nd location in the Institute’s network of federally qualified health centers (FQHCs).
The site was previously operated as an FQHC by AHRC Health Care, Inc., also known as “Access.” For the past year, the Institute collaborated with Access to ensure that patients would have uninterrupted access to care during the transition.
The health center, located just half a block from Westchester Square, offers outstanding primary care, dental care, mental health care and social services for people of all ages. The site will continue to serve patients previously served by Access, many of whom are adults with developmental disabilities. The center will also be open to the public and is welcoming new patients. Patients of the Institute’s Center for Counseling at 2590 Frisby Avenue, located just a few blocks away, can also access medical providers at the new Westchester Square location.
“We are delighted to keep this health care access point open in the community,” said Neil Calman, MD, president and CEO of the Institute. “Federally qualified health centers throughout New York City and State are working hard to make sure that everyone has a primary care home, but many people still don’t. We look forward to continuing to serve current patients and many new patients as we sustain the Institute’s unwavering commitment to meeting the health care needs of all New Yorkers.”
The Institute for Family Health is an FQHC network committed to providing comprehensive and affordable health care to all people, regardless of their ability to pay. The Institute for Family Health at Westchester Square will offer primary medical care for adults and children of all ages, including preventive care and screenings, women’s and men’s health services, mental health services, health education, and care for chronic illnesses, including diabetes and HIV. The center will also offer dental care and social services such as insurance enrollment and care coordination. Institute patients benefit from the organization’s advanced electronic health record, which the Institute’s primary care teams use to make sure patients are getting the best care available. Patients can also access the Institute’s secure online portal to review their medical records, make appointments and securely message their provider.
Importantly, the Institute welcomes all patients regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. The Westchester Square health center will serve patients who receive Medicaid, Medicare and any of dozens of private insurance plans, including “Obamacare” plans available through the New York State of Health insurance marketplace. Patients without insurance may be eligible for a discount based on their household size and income. The Institute never turns anyone away because they cannot pay for care.
