In Memory of Dr. Robert “Red” Schiller

July 01, 2026

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Robert “Red” Schiller on June 30, 2026, at age 72, following a year-long battle with cancer.

Dr. Schiller’s legacy at the Institute for Family Health is monumental. As a visionary and long-time leader of the Institute’s family medicine training programs, Dr. Schiller’s professional impact lives on through his students, residents, faculty, attendings and staff of the three residency programs he developed and led for nearly four decades. In his role as Chief Academic Officer at the Institute for Family Health, Dr. Schiller influenced the careers of hundreds of emerging family physicians, who now carry on his commitment to health equity across the United States.

As the founding Vice Chair and most recently as Interim Chair of the Alfred and Gail Engelberg Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, he guided the Department through periods of tremendous growth and change. He also oversaw several fellowship programs that prepared future leaders in primary care. Dr. Schiller’s mentorship has influenced countless residents, students, and faculty members, while his national leadership has helped strengthen family medicine education across the country.

As a practicing family physician throughout his career, Dr. Schiller was beloved by his patients for his honesty, integrity and superhuman capacity to make people feel valued. He was an extraordinary listener and able to care for people with utmost compassion, and without judgment.

We extend our sincere condolences to Dr. Schiller’s family – his spouse, his three children, and his sister. As he was a steadfast giant in family medicine, he was also always a dedicated husband, father, brother, and son.

Rest in peace, Dr. Red Schiller. You are irreplaceable and we at the Institute will humbly strive to carry on your profound legacy.
