February 26, 2025

On February 7, 2025, Dr. Neil Calman, CEO of the Institute for Family Health, received the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognizes his extraordinary 50-year career as a physician leader and an outstanding advocate for improving healthcare access and quality for all patients. Given every year at NACHC’s Policy & Issues Forum, the Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges those who have dedicated their careers to improving community health centers.

Dr. Calman began practicing medicine in community health centers in New York City early in his career. Since 1985, Dr. Calman has been the CEO of the Institute for Family Health, which he helped to found. The organization currently serves over 100,000 patients annually in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Dr. Calman’s work has consistently focused on removing barriers to health care in communities that have been neglected due to poverty and racism. He has also supported health workforce training programs at Institute health centers, including programs in family medicine, nursing, administration and behavioral health. Under Dr. Calman’s leadership, the Institute has also become a recognized leader in leveraging health information technology to deliver high quality services. Throughout his career, he has led advocacy efforts that advance the community health center model of care. He is currently completing a term as Chair of the CHCANYS Public Policy Committee.

We are grateful to Dr. Calman for his vision, leadership and tireless efforts in support of health care as a human right and something that should be accessible to all, regardless of one’s ability to pay.
