Two New York City-based residencies to merge into single program

We are pleased to announce that the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Program and Harlem Family Medicine Residency program, both operated by the Institute for Family Health, will join forces to become one program. Currently, both programs function as sibling programs, with residents rotating together on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service as well as nearly all inpatient and many outpatient rotations. The primary distinction between the two programs lies in their assigned continuity clinic sites. Under the planned merger, the strengths of both programs will be leveraged to become one 13-13-13 program. Primary inpatient and outpatient training sites will remain the same, with residents and faculty joined under a single leadership team and one ACGME program number.

Recruitment process for the incoming cohort of residents who begin residency in July 2025 (Class of 2028) will remain the same. Each program will recruit and match separately through ERAS and NRMP. The transition to a single program will require official approval by the ACGME.  Thus, the start date of the joint program will depend on their approval process and is anticipated to occur on or after July 2025. If the merger is delayed or rejected, both programs will continue to operate as they currently do, as sibling programs.

Mount Sinai remains a committed partner to the program and plans to continue as the host of the majority of our core inpatient rotations and several of our outpatient rotations. We will continue to operate a family medicine inpatient teaching service at the flagship Mount Sinai Hospital where residents from both programs have trained together since 2017. All residents will continue to develop their skills in caring for a diverse panel of patients at one of the current Institute for Family Health continuity clinics: the Institute for Family Health at 17th Street, the Harlem Family Health Center, or the Walton Family Health Center. We believe that moving the family medicine residency positions from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Program to the Institute for Family Health will strengthen the educational experience and advocacy power of residents and faculty who already share core values and a vision for enhancing healthcare for our patients.
