Alexa Mieses MD receives the Steven B. Tamarin Award at Mount Sinai Medical School Awards Ceremony

New York, NY (May 17, 2016) – On May 12, 2016 Dr. Neil Calman, Professor and Chair of the Alfred and Gail Engelberg Department of Family Medicine and Community Health presented the STEVEN B. TAMARIN, MD MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN FAMILY MEDICINE at the awards ceremony for graduating students of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.   Dr. Steven B. Tamarin was a family physician on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, one of the first family physicians to practice in Manhattan. He was a lifelong advocate for the development of Family Medicine in New York City and cared for his patients for many years at what is now Mount Sinai West. One of his dreams was the establishment of a Department of Family Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

This award is given to the student who has worked most diligently to develop and support interest in Family Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine and to promote Family Medicine as a specialty choice for medical students throughout their training.

Dr. Calman presented this award to Alexa Mieses.

While at the Icahn School of Medicine, Alexa helped increase interest in Family Medicine as President of the Family Medicine Interest Group. The group received the Program of Excellence Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians and Alexa received the Family Medicine Leads Scholarship. She also served as Student Delegate for the New York State Academy of Family Physicians. Over three years she filled three roles at EHHOP, the student-run, physician supervised free clinic serving marginalized patients in East Harlem.

Alexa will continue her training in family medicine at Duke University Medical Center.  Congratulations, Alexa!
