What is Wellness?
March 02, 2018
“Paying attention and taking action.”
Wellness means taking control of your life by engaging with all its dimensions. Wellness is more than the absence of disease or stress; it refers to overall wellbeing. It’s having purpose in life, participating actively in work and play, and having relationships that give you joy.
Integrated care at the Institute for Family Health coordinates mental health, substance abuse, medical, case and care management services, and a variety of wellness-centered groups to help you make the choices that lead to a more satisfying lifestyle.
Institute staff can help you with each of the eight dimensions of wellness:
- Physical health
- Emotional health
- Social connections and relationships
- Financial security
- Occupational satisfaction (through work or volunteering)
- Intellectual stimulation and creativity
- Environmental health
- Spirituality
Which aspects of wellness are most important to you, right now? We can help with:
- Weight Management (weight loss, maintenance)
- Tobacco use
- Yoga, exercise, and fitness
- Mental and medical health self-management
- Chronic disease self-management (diabetes, hypertension, HIV and more)
- Stress management
- Living free from drugs or alcohol
Ask your primary care provider or mental health clinician about our Wellness Connection program, tailored specifically for people with mental health diagnoses who want to achieve greater wellness. We look forward to helping you take control of your health!
