Partnership with New York City & FEMA expands vaccine access in the Bronx

April 30, 2021

The Institute is collaborating with New York City and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to expand access to COVID-19 vaccines in the Soundview Peninsula, a geographically isolated and medically underserved neighborhood in the Bronx. On April 14, 2021, NYC and FEMA staff began providing COVID-19 vaccines to the community from a temporary vaccine clinic located inside the Institute’s Stevenson Family Health Center at 731 White Plains Road in Soundview. As of April 28th, just 43% of residents of the Soundview area had received at least one dose of vaccine, compared with more than 70% of residents in many wealthier Manhattan neighborhoods.

“We are very glad to partner with New York City to host the FEMA team providing these vaccines,” said Cindy-Lou Killikelly, Vice President of Nursing at the Institute for Family Health. “We are hopeful that this additional access will make it even easier for people in the Soundview Peninsula to get the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine.”

The NYC/FEMA clinic is offering the two-dose Pfizer vaccine. All New Yorkers age 16 or older can walk-in Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm without an appointment, or make an appointment at vaccinefinder.nyc.gov. People ages 16 or 17 should come with a parent or guardian. Everyone should bring ID and a copy of their insurance card, if available. Insurance is not required.

The Institute for Family Health has been offering COVID-19 vaccines directly at the Stevenson Family Health Center since January. To date, about 2,000 individuals have received both doses of vaccine and an additional 400 have received their first dose. The Institute’s appointments have filled quickly since January, and we continue to outreach to our patients and community members to offer appointments as they open.  The new NYC/FEMA clinic will allow even more New Yorkers to access vaccination in the Soundview Peninsula.
