Remembering Dr. James Mumford

July 12, 2024

We are saddened by the passing of Dr. James Mumford, a deeply committed champion of family medicine and medical education. Revered by his colleagues, patients and students, Dr. Mumford was an exceptional physician and gifted teacher. He will be remembered for his tireless advocacy, inspiring teaching and unwavering commitment to compassionate care.

Dr. Mumford joined the Institute in 1993 as the first Director of Inpatient Services, where he helped develop the Institute’s Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Medicine (now the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Program). He went on to develop and lead additional family medicine residencies in other health systems, always seeking to nourish his students’ strengths and promote a culture of committed care and advocacy for all patients. Dr. Mumford has also served as a member of the New York State Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors since 2006. In 2022, he was honored as his chapter’s Family Physician of the Year.

For those wishing to remember Dr. Mumford, he had requested for donations to be directed in his name to the AAFP Foundation in support of scholarships to AAFP National Conference of Residents & Students.

The Institute sends our condolences to Dr. Mumford’s family. He will be deeply missed.
