COVID-19: What you need to know now
October 28, 2020
While New York State continues to report low COVID-19 infection numbers, many other states are currently facing significant increases. Here are some things you should continue to do to prevent COVID-19:
- Masks work! Wear a mask or face covering. The mask needs to cover both your mouth and your nose. Avoid touching your face or adjusting your mask once it’s in place.
- Practice “social distancing.” Try to stay six feet away from others when you are traveling, shopping or doing other activities. Avoid large gatherings, especially indoors.
- Wash your hands. Use soap and warm water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Stay informed. Find sources of information verified by scientists. The New York State Health Department is a good place to start.
- Get tested. To get a COVID-19 test, you can visit the New York State Health Department’s website or call the COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-364-3065. New York State offers tests through these channels free of charge.
Now is also the time to get your flu shot! The flu shot is safe and effective for anyone six months of age or older. Protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu – schedule an appointment at your Institute health center to get your flu vaccine.
Be safe when you vote and during the holidays. Make sure you are as safe as possible for Halloween, Election Day, Thanksgiving and other upcoming holidays. The CDC has tips for each occasion:
- Have a safe Halloween
- Observe Día de los Muertos safely
- Election Day – vote safe!
- Plan a safe Thanksgiving
Remember that it’s important to get the health care you need, especially if you have a chronic condition. Our health centers are open for primary care and dental care, and we offer mental health care via telehealth. At your visit, talk to your provider about what you can do to stay healthy this fall and winter.
You can help keep COVID rates low in New York. If we all work together to follow these guidelines, we can save lives.
