The Institute joins the DAISY Foundation to honor nurses

The Institute has joined the DAISY Foundation to honor outstanding nursing care by offering the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, an annual award that recognizes the clinical skill and compassion in nursing care.

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been adopted by healthcare facilities around the world to celebrate nurses for their extraordinary care and compassion. It is designed to recognize nurse-led teams of two or more nurses who come together to solve a specific situation by going above and beyond. Anyone can submit a nomination for the DAISY Award–including patients, family members, co-workers, physicians and staff. A committee of nurses at the Institute will blindly select the winner from the submissions.

Each member of the winning nursing team will receive a certificate commending them for being an “Extraordinary Nurse,” and the overall winner receives an engraved plaque.

“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Cindy-Lou Killikelly, RN, the Institute’s Chief Nursing Officer. “It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.”

The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit and is based in Glen Ellen, California. It was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon autoimmune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
