Prenatal Care is Better Together: CenteringPregnancy at the Institute

August 16, 2018

Have you seen the latest addition to IFH’s YouTube channel? A new video launched last week, showcasing the CenteringPregnancy model. This style of group prenatal care is currently offered at Stevenson, Walton, Harlem and 17th St. Throughout their second and third trimesters of pregnancy, patients can receive their routine medical care in a relaxed setting with other patients at similar points of their pregnancies. Besides having a chance to complete their medical checkup, women and their families have snacks, play games, and support each other around a wide range of topics, from common discomforts of pregnancy to breastfeeding and newborn care.

The research speaks for itself, with better birth outcomes for mothers who participate in group prenatal care. Studies have shown that patients who participate in CenteringPregnancy have fewer preterm deliveries and their babies are born at healthier weights. Not only do the Centering patients and providers get to know one another better and spend more time together, they benefit from hearing others’ questions and experiences. Listen to what the patients have to say about their experience in the new video, and contact your Maternal Health Advocate for more information or to get involved!
