A hot meal and a free haircut

February 21, 2017

Last month we teamed up with the owners of Queens-based barbershop, Corona Barbershop Plus, to offer free haircuts to our homeless patients. The Institute operates a health center alongside the soup kitchen in the basement of Broadway Presbyterian Church on Mondays and Wednesdays. On a Monday afternoon, the barbers visited the soup kitchen and our health center giving fresh new haircuts to nearly 20 men.

Mayra Varela, medical office assistant at the Institute, helped facilitate this event. She said about the day, “This event was important for our homeless patients because they matter and something as simple as a haircut means so much to them. They don’t have the resources to care for their appearances, so having experienced barbers cater to them was special to our patients – it was written all over their faces!”
